Our Professionalism Spotlight series highlights Illinois legal professionals who demonstrate the ideals of professionalism in their careers.
In this Professionalism Spotlight, we spoke to Thomas Yu, City Attorney for the City of Champaign Legal Department. Thomas has practiced law for 25 years, focusing on litigation and municipal law.
How do you remain civil in tense situations?
I take a deep breath, then try to focus on the big-picture goal of finding reasonable compromises. Losing your composure or overreacting may feel good in the moment, but will damage your reputation, credibility, and relationships.
What is an attorney’s role in furthering public confidence in the rule of law?
Lawyers are always being evaluated based on these two criteria: trustworthiness and competence.
Everything that I say and do professionally should build up my trustworthiness and competence. I understand that the public is examining me through the same lens.
What do you think is the biggest challenge impacting lawyers today?
Balancing work and home.
What do you do for fun?
I play basketball every Sunday night. My goals are to not get injured, catch up with friends, and get some cardio.
I also participate in trivia nights with family and friends. Every week, we come up with a new donut-themed team name.
