Professionalism Spotlight: Shari Rhode, Rhode Law Firm

Shari Rhode

Our Professionalism Spotlight series highlights Illinois legal professionals who demonstrate the ideals of professionalism in their careers.

In this Professionalism Spotlight, we spoke to Shari Rhode, owner of Rhode Law Firm in Carbondale, Ill. Shari practices in the areas of employment law, business law, and litigation.

She has also served as an Associate Professor at Southern Illinois University Simmons Law School, a member of the Illinois State Bar Association Board of Governors, and an Illinois State Bar Foundation Fellow.

How do you remain civil in tense situations?

Always being respectful and courteous. Take a deep breath, remember this too will pass, and that civility produces better results.

What is an attorney’s role in furthering public confidence in the rule of law?

Stressing good communication. In addition, always being open and honest and willing to help explain the law, why it is important to follow the law, and helping others understand how best they can comply.

What is the biggest challenge impacting lawyers today?

Helping others understand why following the law is important and explaining to other lawyers why it is important that they set good examples. This includes complying with our professional ethics and providing help to our community through pro bono services and/or financial support.

How can the legal profession address workplace bullying?

Calling the bully out on their behavior in a professional way and showing them better ways to deal with the person they disagree with.

If that doesn’t work, take appropriate corrective action, either with counseling or discipline. If it’s not your place to take the corrective, bring the behavior to the attention of the person whose role it is to deal with the behavior (i.e., that person’s supervisor).

What do you do for fun?

Cook, play with my puppies, and visit with my friends
