Professionalism Spotlight: L. Drew Hickey, Bolen, Robinson, and Ellis, LLP

Our Professionalism Spotlight series highlights Illinois legal professionals who demonstrate the ideals of professionalism in their careers.

In this Professionalism Spotlight, we spoke to L. Drew Hickey, a Partner at Bolen, Robinson, and Ellis, LLP in Decatur, Ill. Drew practices in the areas of adoption, guardianship, probate, and estate planning.

How do you remain civil in tense situations?

I keep in mind that while client problems are acute in the moment and require zealous advocacy, over time, each issue can be resolved in many different ways.

I also keep in mind that while most of us [lawyers and judges] are in court routinely, court proceedings are often when someone is at their worst due to stress and pressure, and [their behavior] may not be indicative of how they are in everyday life.

What is an attorney’s role in furthering public confidence in the rule of law?

We must advocate for the equity of checks and balances provided by the law.

We must also advocate for all professionals — judges, attorneys, and court personnel — to act as judges do: with impartiality.

The more we educate people on our roles within the system and the judiciary’s role, the more trust and confidence can be built.

What do you think is the biggest challenge impacting lawyers today?

In downstate Illinois, the lack of attorneys in rural communities is a huge strain on legal resources due to the sheer number of clients.

These clients need to be served while we [downstate lawyers] are also maintaining our integrity, quality of legal work, commitment to pro bono legal work, and personal lives and families.

What do you do for fun?

I like to spend time with my family (my husband, Rob, our two girls, and our dog), go hiking, listen to music, and watch Disney movies.

Our Professionalism Spotlight recognizes legal professionals throughout Illinois who are admired for their professionalism and civility. Check out more interviews here.
