Our Professionalism Spotlight series highlights Illinois legal professionals who demonstrate the ideals of professionalism in their careers.
In this Professionalism Spotlight, we spoke to Karen R. Mills, an attorney at Aronberg Goldgehn in Wheaton, Ill. Karen concentrates her practice in estate planning, probate, and trust administration and guardianships.
Karen is the Immediate Past President of the DuPage County Bar Association (2024-2025).
How do you remain civil in tense situations?
I try to remember I am always advocating for my client, so I lead with empathy for their unique situation.
Family issues can become very personal. I attempt to remove the emotion, follow the law, and provide a cost efficient and expedient resolution to the matter.
I think that civility is calming, and I believe in caring for one’s client and advocating for them without degrading opposing counsel in the process.
I utilize active listening, ask open-ended questions, and choose my words carefully to avoid making any “I” statements. Making appropriate eye contact and being mindful of my tone of voice and body language are important.
When engaged in difficult discussions, I practice respectful disagreement.
How can attorney’s further public confidence in the rule of law?
On May 2, 2025, the DuPage County Bar Association celebrated Law Day. This year’s theme was, “The Constitution: Out of Many, One.”
During the celebration, Chief Judge Bonnie Wheaton re-administered the [ attorney’s oath] to attendees. This offered a powerful reminder of our commitment to justice, democracy, and the rule of law.
Attorneys should remember our pledge and live up to it as best they can each day and in every situation.
Lawyers should also promote understanding of our legal system by volunteering their time and expertise in the communities in which they live and practice. Through this meaningful work, lawyers can help the public navigate our legal system and understand their rights.
A commitment to pro bono work and community legal organizations is rewarding and encouraged.
A lawyer’s conduct directly impacts their reputation. Emphasis must be placed on honesty, fairness, and integrity.
What is the biggest challenge impacting lawyers today?
Mental health for attorneys is a significant challenge today. It is important to talk about how we are feeling to reduce the stigma and understand that we are not alone in our respective challenges.
There is a tremendous demand for legal services, which this places pressure on lawyers to handle a large caseload. This leads to long hours, stress, and a lack of work-life balance, which can result in burnout.
Being aware of this reality and having a plan to maintain balance is essential.
What do you do for fun?
I love spending time with our children, grandchildren, and dear friends!
We are blessed to travel and visit new places each year. I enjoy exploring new cultures and adapting to unfamiliar environments. Travel helps me to recharge and stay active, which is important for maintaining a good work-life balance.
For my 60th birthday, I biked through Tuscany with a dear friend and then had the good fortune to bike from South Carolina to Georgia. These trips have taught me the importance of setting goals and creating the structure in which to achieve them.
