Are you a law student or know a law student who could use scholarship assistance? The Illinois Judges Foundation (IJF) is accepting applications for a $5,000 scholarship until 3:00 p.m. on June 20, 2019. The Harold Sullivan Scholarship was established to ensure the promotion of ethical values to new generations of Illinois law students.
The Illinois Judges Association established the IJF in 2007 to serve as its charitable arm. Its members include both current, sitting judges and retired judges from the state court level throughout Illinois. The IJF funds educational, civic and scholarship projects that advance the rule of law, legal profession, and administration of justice. It encourages judicial participation in all these endeavors.
The IFJ’s Harold Sullivan Scholarship is named for the late Judge Harold Sullivan. Sullivan was elevated to the bench in 1960 and served in Skokie for much of his career. He was the presiding judge of the Cook County’s 2nd Municipal District for more than 30 years. Sullivan was a dedicated mentor and co-founded the Illinois Judges Association. In his honor, in 2007, the IJF first awarded this scholarship.
The IJF will award this scholarship to one or more law students attending an Illinois law school. The monies will be paid to the winning students’ law school(s) to cover tuition and related costs. Some law schools agreed to award matching funds, potentially increasing the value of the scholarship award.
To be eligible, the applicant must meet the following criteria:
- Does not have a family member who is a judge;
- Is a first or second year law student at an Illinois law school;
- Has community service or pro bono experience; and
- Has financial need
