As the head of GWC’s Specialty Litigation Practice, Mr. Northcutt handles a broad range of high stakes matters, with emphasis on catastrophic injury and wrongful death cases, complex commercial/fraud claims, civil rights actions and white collar criminal defense.
A former Cook County prosecutor and law enforcement officer, Lance Northcutt is a passionate courtroom advocate who represents clients in cases through trial and on appeal. He was successfully handled numerous sensitive and complex matters on behalf of clients who imminent threats to their livelihood or liberty.
Lance has taught trial advocacy, evidence, and advocacy-related legal ethics in the United States and Ireland since 2005. As an Adjunct Professor, he has served as the Assistant Director of Advocacy at The John Marshall Law School and now teaches at IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law where he leads Kent’s International Comparative Advocacy Program in Dublin, Ireland in cooperation with The Honorable Society of King’s Inns, the Bar Council of Ireland, and the Irish Supreme Court. In 2013, he was named both Adjunct Professor of the Year and Outstanding Trial Team Coach at Chicago-Kent.
Lance has a large portfolio of published work, including an editorial that earned him a national award from the American Bar Association and others which have appeared in the Chicago Bar Association Journal and the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin. His most recent articles, “First, Do No Harm” and “Illinois Evidence: A Code at Long Last,” were featured in the Illinois Trial Lawyers’ Journal.
As a Chicago native, Lance graduated from The John Marshall Law School where he was a member of The John Marshall Law Review, a Morrisey Scholar, Editor-in-Chief of two publications and winner of the Hertzog Academic Scholarship and the Kissane Award for Public Service. He is an active member of the Illinois Trial Lawyers’ Association and the Illinois Bar Association. In addition to his work at GWC and in academia, Mr. Northcutt serves on the Board of Directors for the International Institute for Animal Law and volunteers for FSMA (Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy).
He is licensed to practice law before the Illinois Supreme Court, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, the United States District Court for the Central District of Illinois, the United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois, the United States District Court for the Western District of Michigan and the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.
Lance Northcutt has served on the Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism since 2016.
