Hon. Kathryn Creswell


Kathryn Creswell, Chief Judge of the 18th Judicial Circuit Court, has served on the bench since her initial appointment in 1995. As an Associate Judge, she began her tenure hearing cases in the Traffic, Domestic Relations, and the Misdemeanor Divisions before being assigned to the Felony Division in 1999.

Two years later the Illinois Supreme Court appointed Judge Creswell as a Circuit Judge; soon thereafter she was elected to a full term (2002), retained by voters (2008) and subsequently named Presiding Judge in the Circuit’s Felony Division. In 2014, Creswell was unanimously elected Chief Judge by the judges of the court, rated recommended in an Illinois State Bar Association and participating attorney retention poll, and several months later once again retained by voters, this time with 81 percent of the vote.

Creswell earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan before going on to receive her juris doctor degree from DePaul University.

Active in the legal field, Judge Creswell currently serves as a member of the Supreme Court Committee on Illinois Evidence and with the Supreme Court e-Business Policy Advisory Board. She has also served as Presiding Judge of the Statewide Grand Jury in Northern Illinois, Special Supreme Court Committee on Capital Cases and the Illinois Judicial Benchbook on Criminal Law Committee.

Hon. Kathryn Creswell has served as a member of the Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism since its inception in 2005.
