expungement summit pro bonoAs October quickly approaches, lawyers are putting service top-of-mind. Each October, the legal community celebrates Pro Bono Month by giving back. Illinois attorneys specifically dedicate a whole week to pro bono service that falls at the end of the month.

This fall is no exception.

Next month, the Champaign County Circuit Clerk’s Office will host its first Expungement and Record Sealing Summit for those looking to clear past criminal records. The event boasts full-service assistance with applications, preparation, and filing for both adult and juvenile criminal record expungement, sealing, and alternative forms of relief for Illinois residents in need. The best part? It’s completely free.

The Expungement and Record Sealing Summit is set for Saturday, October 22nd from 8:30AM to 5:00PM. Stone Creek Church, located at 2502 S. Race Street in Urbana will house the Summit.

Registration is required to attend the event, and will close on October 14th. Those who register for the Summit will receive a designated time where he/she will meet with an attorney to work through the expungement and/or record sealing process.

If you have additional questions or concerns about the event or the process, please call the Champaign County Circuit Clerk’s Office at 217-384-3725.

Though, the legal community specifically celebrates service each October. Pro bono service is a lawyer’s professional duty year round.

In fact, according to the Illinois Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission’s most recent annual report, 31,362 lawyers performed 2,055,987 hours of pro bono legal services and 17,565 lawyers made $14,802,544 in monetary contributions to pro bono legal services organizations. Impressive, right?

That being said, the event is still in need of attorneys to assist Illinois residents attending the Summit. To volunteer, attorneys must register for a brief training session prior to the event.

In the meantime, let’s spread the word amongst the Illinois community. Please share with family and friends by word of mouth and on social media.
