James DeAno is a Managing Partner at the law firm DeAno & Scarry, where he specializes in civil rights and employment law. Prior to this, James served as a partner at Norton Manchini Weller & DeAno, and as a staff attorney for the Illinois Supreme Court. He has more than 20 years of experience representing defendants in civil litigation cases before the United States Supreme Court, the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, the Illinois Supreme and Appellate Courts, as well as, federal and Illinois trial courts.
Mr. DeAno is experienced in litigation, civil rights, tort immunity, police and municipal liability. James previously served as a faculty member at the Chicago Kent College of Law, where he took part in the annual conference on Section 1983 Civil Rights Litigation. He has lectured and instructed attorneys and insurance representatives on topics including trial practice, discovery and damages. He has published a number of articles in the Illinois Bar Journal and the Journal of the Illinois Association of Defense Trial Counsel on similar topics.
Mr. DeAno received his Bachelor of Science from Western Illinois University. He received his Juris Doctorate in 1981 from The John Marshall Law School.
Mr. DeAno has given a great deal to the Illinois legal community. Since he was admitted to the bar, James has been active in the Illinois Bar Association, the DuPage County Bar Association, and the Illinois Defense Counsel. He served as the General Counsel of the DuPage County Bar Association for four terms and was previously a member of its Judiciary Committee. In addition, Mr. DeAno was appointed to the Illinois Supreme Court Committee on Civil Jury Instructions, where he served as chair of the committee from 2013 to 2015.
Mr. DeAno has served on the Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism since 2017. He served as Vice-Chair of the Commission from 2019 to 2022.
